Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT), founded in Yan'an in 1940, is one of top universities in China and has been playing a prominent role in science and technology since its establishment. It’s one of the first batch of universities selected into the national elite education programme including “Project 211”, “Project 985” and the Top Tier A “World-class University Consortium”.
The Institute of Advanced Structure Technology, established in 2015, is a research institution of BIT with a particular focus on research in sophisticated structure and technology. Our mission is targeting at the cutting-edge fundamental science and technology to develop innovative solutions to advanced equipment and facilities by optimizing their internal and external structures and layouts, in order to serve the development of the high-end modern equipment of strategic importance to the national scientific demand in the medium and long term.
The Institute is bringing together academics of interdisciplinary fields from across the world. It sits in two campuses of BIT with an area of approximate 7,000 square meters, affiliated 12 joint research centers or laboratories in partnership with industry. The Institute is equipped itself with world leading research equipment and facilities with a value of more than 140 million yuan (≈19.3 million US dollars), including over 60 large-scale equipment, primarily supporting teaching and research.
To meet the strategic national demands and leading-edge research, the Institute has been engaged with innovative research and has undertaken a number of major national projects right from its outset. Over the successive six years from 2018 to 2023, the annual research funding has exceeded 100 million yuan (≈ 13.8 thousand US dollars) and the annual research funding per capita is over 3 million yuan (≈41.4 thousand US dollars). Over the past three years, the per capita output of academic papers in SCI journals is more than three, among which over 55 percent are top journals home and abroad.
Under the Institute there are “two research institutes” and “one center”: the Institute of Lightweight Multifunctional Composite Materials and Structures, the Institute of Energy, Optoelectronics, and Biomimetic Materials and Devices, and the Center for Computational Simulation and Testing Technology and Instrument Development.
We aspire to establish research platforms in the following four domains: the large-scale main load-bearing composite material structures for high-end equipment; the light-weight multifunctional integrated composite materials and structures; the energy and optoelectronic materials and flexible functional devices, and the manufacturing technology for materials and structures as well as their performance testing equipment and software development.
It is established as an interdisciplinary research institute to develop innovative solutions institutionally and technologically and henceforth grow to be a creative talent cultivating base. At present, it focuses on more than ten research directions, including development and manufacturing for composite materials and structures, design and production of organic polymer materials, noise from structural vibration and its control, robot design and control, explosion and impact mechanics, fluid-structure interaction mechanics, materials and structural mechanics in extreme environments, micro-nano mechanics & biomimetic materials and structural mechanics, structural materials under ultra-high temperature, energy and environmental materials, material metallurgy and physical chemistry, advanced manufacturing processes (laser/additive/micro-nano/intelligent manufacturing), X-ray 3D imaging technology and CT non-destructive testing.
By the end of July 2025, there are 43 full-time faculty members comprising 17 professors, 24 associate professors, and 2 assistant professors. Among them over 30 percent are top-notch talents acknowledged by different national talent incentive programmes. In addition, there are 25 postdoctoral researchers. Headed by the academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the research team of the Institute is mainly made up of national leading talents, national young talents as well as young teachers.
